„The Many Colours of My Voice“ – Voice Training and Singing for Men
with Imke McMurtrie
last Wednesday of each month in Lueneburg
To discover one’s own voice is an adventure which touches us and makes us truthful to ourselves and to others. But often it is not easy for men to show the whole spectrum between power and tenderness. Songs from different cultures of the world encourage us to explore the different colours of our voices. Singing together gives us a space and the support to find an expression for them.

Santeli (Georgian: canlde-light) This vocal trio is inspired by the exceptional radiance of Georgian traditional polyphonic song. Many of these songs stem from pre-christian times. Their content are themes that concern the community: love-songs, healing songs, work songs, dance songs, songs about birth and death, travelling songs, sacred songs.
In 2004 Georgian traditional polyphonic song was included on the list of World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO.
Together with Georgian native singers Kirsten Dietrich, Imke McMurtrie and Astrid Münder uncover the secret of this special heritage. Over the years they developed a quality of harmony singing which can take the listener into a space of emotional intimacy and overwhelming beauty where any resistance can melt.
In October 2018 the trio appeared at the International Book Fair in Frankfurt and presented the new release: Songbook Georgia/Liederbuch Georgien (Tamar Buadze, Imke McMurtrie)

“The Wisdom of the Ancient Song”
May, 4. – 6. in The Benediktushof in Holzkirchen/Wuerzburg
Since Georgian polyphonic vocal music has been listed by the Unesco World Heritange in 2001, these unique songs with their extraordinary harmonies teach us, how singing about the many facets of human existence can transcend social, national, cultural and religious differences. Without judging or expecting perfection our voice can become the mediator of deep feelings and profound sincerity.
From some still intact ethnic communities, where the body is understood as a sacred and sound “musical” instrument, we can learn to remember how naturalness, lightness, flexibility and energy is the original state of our own bodies and voices. And maybe we can realise, how every being with its own song is part of “the great symphony of life”. (Hazrat Inayat Khan)
The seminar is open to anyone who would like to explore their voice and their vibrational qualities, especially to therapists, pedagogues, speakers, musicians, teachers, midwives, (choir-)singers and social workers, who are interested in a lively, mindful and easy contact with their singing and speaking voice.

BREATHING, BODY, VOICE – The Work of Elsa Gindler and The Unfolding The Voice
with Stephanie Kraus and Imke McMurtrie
The body work in the tradition of Elsa Gindler (1885–1961), also known as Gindler-work is a way of self inquiry. It is based on releasing deeply rooted tendencies and habits that hold and contract muscular tissue. Sensing and understanding the inner workings of our own body we can discover the free flow of our breathing and the lightness of our natural movements. To experience this interaction teaches us to respect the physical principles of our body and to develop a new competence, which we can draw on in times of outer stress or inner imbalance.
A free body has a great potential to resonate and – like a good musical instrument – it can allow the voice to unfold. Each time we receive our inbreath, we connect with a source, a stillness – something deeply meaningful within us, with which we can learn to stay in contact even while speaking or singing. The prerequisite for an authentic singing and speaking voice as well as for truthful communication with ourselves and others, is to experience our body as a transparent, energetic space of resonance, in which the voice can vibrate in its multi-faceted nature. On that basis songs of indigenous cultures can provide the possibility to experience how various feeling qualities affect us.
The objective of this work is to integrate the liveliness of our movement and our voice into our everyday life – beyond attitude and posture – and in this way regaining our own inner balance and strength. Insights into the anatomy of our body and the function of our voice are an integral part of the seminar, which complement the process of developing a greater self awareness.
This seminar is aimed at people who wish to relate lively and attentively to their body and their voice. At the same time it offers ways of stress management and regeneration.

2015
28. 2. – 1. 3. in Munich – Seminar: “The Wisdom of the Voice”
Seminar with Imke McMurtrie
In this seminar we will learn to listen to our own voice and to its multifacetted possibilities. We will discover our instrument “the voice” which conveys to us how we are tuned in different situations. With simple polyphonic songs from Georgia (UNESCO Cultural Heritage) we can experience how we are all part of a vibrating oneness. The voice unfolds in a dynamic field of independence and interdependence. It is a way of experiencing its healing and uplifting qualities directly through our body.
Registration: Stephanie Erkens: erkens@klangderstille.com

“Tavis upleba – The Freedom to be oneself”
Meeting with Western Classical music and Ethnic music from West- and Eastern-Europe in the newly opened museum in Lueneburg/North-Germany. Together with the Lueneburg women’s choir Femmes Vocales, guest musicians from the Caucasian Republic Georgia and from Germany will guide you through the museum with music and song.

We will witness a meeting and merging of two musical traditions that outwardly may seem to be very different, but inwardly both share fascinating parallels. Together with our audience, we want to experience the peace making and unifying role of music, that knows of no borders, prejudices or power-struggles, but rather emphasises the international, harmonical laws of mankind and reminds us of its songs, the longing for self-determination and peace of all people.

“In Harmony With Your Own Voice”
Veranstaltungsraum Walter-Brandäcker 16 – 83250 Marquartstein
Music-ethnological studies have shown, that the effect of community singing reaches far beyond national borders. It seems that while immersing ourselves in the traditional songs of other cultures, we connect with an acient emotional memory, that belongs to mankind. On this seminar day we will acquaint ourselves with Georgian polyphonic songs (which are on the list of the UNESCO Cultural Heritage). They teach us very concretely that we are all part of a vibratiing whole and that we are inter-connected  in a vital relationship between autonomy, community and nature. A voice that is aware and truthful towards oneself has a different quality – it is touching and liberating at the same time.
with Imke McMurtrie (Singing- and Voice-Tuition) and Marianne Wegener(Qigong)
The voice can be considered as a seismograph for the connectedness with ourselves and our inner centre. When we listen to what out own voice is telling us, it can become an important means to perceive ourselves and others.
Indigenous cultures who still live in a natural connection with the forces of heaven and earth, are valuing this unity through singing. Their songs can inspire us to use the varied possibilities of our voice as a holistic approach to ourselves and as a source of health.
TaiJi and Qigong can provide the possibility to deeply understand our body and our mind. The exercises of the Qigong are freeing the body and loosen rigidity. This can lead to the opening of spaces of resonance which will guide the voice to greater freedom and ease. The exercises of the “Healing Sounds” are five breathing techniques which will help to get rid of too much pressure, tightness or negative emotions.
In the mornings and the evenings we will practise the TaiJi-Form of the „Five Elements“ outdoors, to experience ourselves as part of nature and of the beauty of this very special island.

A free body provides a great possibility for resonance. That means that the vibration of ones voice can travel freely through the whole of your body without hindrance, like with a well built musical instrument. To experience your body as an instrument full of life and energy and to acquire permeability, flexibility and body awareness is the basis in which the singing voice will thrive. Ethnic songs will teach us, how our voice expresses an inner truth and how it can be part of a wholesome singing experience.

13. – 15. November In Kronberg/FrankfurtÂ
Our voice is an important instrument in communication and a valuable means for self development. However many people are longing to relate to their voice, its sound and its effect in a more conscious way.
IIn this seminar Imke McMurtrie will give a practical insight into the function of breathing and voice production, so that we can express ourselves more authentically  and creatively through our singing and speaking voice in our personal and professional lives. This can be useful not only for people who have to speak publically. By developing a more differenciated body awareness – free from achievement pressure and expectation – we can explore the vibrational quality and the effect of resonance of our voice. This will lead to a greater potential, lightness, balance and joy in the use of voice.

Seminar “Close to Heaven” – Polyphonic Songs from Caucasian Republic of Georgia
with Imke McMurtrieÂ

Under her guidance the choir is singing sacred and worldly songs about themes of human life: childhood, love, old-age, separation and songs to St. Mary or other songs of blessing – sometimes serene, sometimes contemplative interwoven with readings of poetry about the summer and texts about sun and light. July, Berlin with Renate Schulze-Schindler and Imke McMurtrie Bipolar voice work is a way to discover one’s individual and natural voice. It offers the possibility to “let go” of restricting patterns and habits and to develop new ways of using one’s voice. Many ethnic songs have an intrinsic simplicity, a natural beauty and power of expression. How can these simple songs help us to unlock the individuality of our own voice? And how can the bipolar approach contribute to discovering the depth and ease with which these songs should be sung? Info and registration: schulzeschindler@aol.com

Everywhere the signs of our time call for deep changes. How can we really develop and practise new ways of living and thinking? The festival celebrates and researches a culture of abundance, with the fullness of life at its centre. Fullness comes into being through co-operation and communal contribution of free human beings. To bring into existence a culture of abundance, where the values of the community are cared for with heart and hand – this is a creative process that leads to responsible living. One of the goals of the festival is the regional efficiency: to net-work between local initiatives and the creative impulses of the initiators of the festival; to develop new perspectives for a region with a high rate of unemployment and industrial farming. November 19.30h, Klangheilzentrum München Concert: “Songs Along The Silk Road” Imke McMurtrie (Voice), Karin Shefika Holzwarth (Ney, Rebab, Ud) and Herbert Walter (Ney, Ud, Guitar) A very special musical journey to listen and to join in singing From the longing of the Indian Courtesan Songs we are taken into the endlessness of the steppe of Central Asia with the melodies of the Uigurs, the Kazakhs and the Tartars. We will be touched by the powerful harmonies of Georgian polyphony and we enter the heart of Turkish Sufi music. With mulit-colored, tender and energetic sounds we are moving Westwards towards Europe and our musical treasures from the East will cross with melodies that are more known to us. Imke McMurtrie’s touching voice is inspired by the richness of the musical expression of ethnic songs. Karin Shefika Holzwarth and Herbert Walter widen the range with their brilliant and multi-facetted playing on traditional instruments from the Ancient Orient – Dombra, Ney, Rebab, Ud and frame drum. Inspiring rhythmical moments will change into delicate sounds and promise a very special experience for ear and voice.
